Welcome to the Sunday Shit Show….

Well… apparently 6:10 AM was the time to be alive today.

Everyone decided that was where it was at, so I guess I wasn’t sleeping in. Because apparently the children got together overnight and collectively decided, “Mom has had enough sleep. Let’s ruin that.”

So I got everyone settled. Kids were sitting, eating breakfast, and for approximately five minutes, things were relatively peaceful.

Naturally, I thought, You know what? I’m going to be productive.

I decided to work on one of my assignments for class.

I wrote 15 paragraphs.

FIFTEEN.

I made it all the way to the end. I was proud of myself. I was ready to hit submit and move on with my Sunday.

And then…

The Wi-Fi went down.

At that exact moment.

Of course it did.

My entire assignment didn’t submit.

So there I was, before 7 AM, staring at my screen realizing I was going to have to rewrite the entire damn thing.

I wanted to cry.

And it wasn’t even 7:00.

I hadn’t even finished my coffee.

But okay. Fine. Whatever. Moving on.

I cleaned up breakfast, unpacked all the bottles from the sterilizer, and decided we’d have some low-key playtime.

Nothing crazy.

Just some good old-fashioned Sunday morning family fun.

Except apparently my 10-year-old and my 5-year-old cannot exist within a 50-mile radius of each other without immediately turning into WWE superstars.

So by approximately 7:45 AM, I had children crashing into furniture, body-slamming each other onto the floor and generally acting like they were competing for a championship belt.

And of course, it’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.

Then suddenly Mom has to yell.

So… everybody went to their separate corners.

No pun intended. 😂

After that, things actually went somewhat smoothly for a while.

I managed to get two loads of laundry done.

And not only did I wash it…

I folded it.

AND PUT IT AWAY.

Listen, I don’t know who I was this morning, but she was getting shit DONE.

For a brief moment, I thought maybe the chaos had finally run its course.

Boy, was I wrong.

Because then I spent the next two hours waiting for the contractor who was supposed to come finish my bathroom.

No text.

No call.

No knock on the door.

Nothing.

Just me sitting around wondering if and when this man was actually going to show up.

Eventually, it was lunchtime and nap time for the two smallest children, and at that point I was actually hoping he wouldn’t show up because I had entered the stage of the day where I desperately needed everyone to sleep.

I got lunch on the table.

Things were copacetic.

I got the 2-year-old down for a nap by 1:00.

I’m thinking, Okay. I’m winning.

The baby was slightly reluctant to go down, but eventually, at 2:00 PM, I got him to sleep.

Victory.

Silence.

Peace.

Two sleeping children.

Maybe—just maybe—I could breathe.

Until 2:40 PM.

Because apparently my 5-year-old decided that waking the sleeping baby was an excellent Sunday afternoon activity.

😑

I was not happy.

So now I’m looking at an early bedtime for the baby and praying that nap sabotage doesn’t completely screw up the rest of our evening.

And then, because apparently I enjoy making my own life more complicated, I finally texted the contractor around 2:00 to find out what the hell the plan was.

His response?

“Oh, I haven’t heard from the plumber, so we’re just going to do it another day.”

…

Okay.

Cool.

But you know what would’ve been nice?

A text.

A phone call.

Literally anything.

Instead, I spent two hours waiting around for someone who apparently had no intention of showing up.

And now I work all week, so I have absolutely no idea what the plan is moving forward.

Nobody has an answer.

Of course they don’t.

Because why would Sunday be simple?

Now we’re approaching dinner time.

Which means baths.

Bedtime.

The evening routine.

And I’m just sitting here hoping that, for once, the remainder of my night goes smoothly.

Because let’s recap:

I was awake at 6:10 AM.

Lost a 15-paragraph assignment to the Wi-Fi gods.

Witnessed a pre-8 AM WWE match between my children.

Did two loads of laundry.

Folded and put away said laundry like some kind of domestic superhero.

Waited two hours for a contractor who never showed up.

Got the baby down for a nap.

Had said nap sabotaged.

And still have to rewrite 15 damn paragraphs.

All while praying my Wi-Fi doesn’t decide to betray me again.

So yeah…

Just another day in the life of a mom living the dream.

Welcome to the Sunday Shit Show.

Tomorrow is Monday.

God help us all. 😂

About the author

Hi, I’m Amanda.

I’m a mom, a teacher, a foster mom, an advocate, and—most days—a woman just trying to keep all the plates spinning without dropping too many of them.

I’m a biological mom of four and a foster mom to two siblings. I’ve spent more than 20 years working in early childhood education, so children, development, behavior, and the beautifully unpredictable world of parenting have always been a huge part of my life.

But becoming a parent to a child with significant disabilities has given me a perspective I never could have learned from a textbook, a training, or a classroom.

It has taught me about advocacy in ways I never expected. About celebrating the milestones that other people might take for granted. About grieving the things I thought parenthood would look like while simultaneously falling completely in love with the life we actually have.

And it has taught me that sometimes the biggest accomplishments are the tiniest things.

I started Extraordinary Ordinary because I wanted a place to tell the truth about what this life looks like—not just the inspirational moments, but the frustrating ones, the funny ones, the exhausting ones, and the moments that make me stop and think, How did this become our normal?

There is beauty here.

There is chaos here.

There is a whole lot of love here.

And there is definitely some “What the hell are we doing?” here, too. 😂

I don’t consider myself an expert. I’m simply a mom living this life in real time, learning as I go, advocating fiercely for my children, and trying to find the extraordinary tucked inside our very ordinary days.

So, welcome to our story.

I’m glad you’re here.
